BIO
If there’s one thing you remember about Katy Steele, it’s that voice.
Undeniable, ethereal, dramatic and melodic- she’s one of a kind. A creative chameleon, singer-songwriter, and performer with almost two decades in the Australian music industry, Steele continues to evolve and impress.
Hailing from Perth, WA, and born into a family of musicians, Katy has carved her own path. Drawing comparisons to The Pretenders, Blondie, and Fleetwood Mac, she’s developed a sound that fuses classic influences with her love of melodic pop.
Katy’s vocal range, songwriting, and sartorial splendour have attracted favourable comparisons to PJ Harvey and Chrissie Hynde.
At 19, Katy became the front woman of Little Birdy, one of Australia’s most celebrated indie-pop bands. Their debut album BigBigLove (2004) debuted at #5 on the ARIA charts, achieved Gold certification which featured singles like Beautiful to Me- which reached #8 on the Triple J Hottest 100. They followed up with Hollywood (2006) and Confetti (2009), both earning ARIA Gold status and proving their staying power. Their songs became defining indie anthems of the mid 2000’s era.
After Little Birdy went on hiatus, Katy relocated to New York, immersing herself in songwriting and production while navigating a personal and creative transformation. During that time, she wrote and recorded extensively, though much of the work remains unreleased. Those years of exploration and growth eventually led to her debut solo album Human, a record that showcased both her resilience and her evolving artistry.
In 2023, Katy released her second solo album, Big Star, developed in her home studio with her partner, a two-year DIY labour of love. The album was feature album on Double J and praised for its glistening synths, bold melodies, and her unmistakable voice
In 2025, Katy reunited with Little Birdy for their first shows in over a decade for the 21st anniversary of their debut album BigBigLove. The re-release of BigBigLove debuted at #2 on the national vinylcharts, reaffirming the band’s cultural impact.
Now based back in Perth, Katy has entered a new chapter developing 'Undressed' a new sparse and delicate body of work. Katy continues to push her creative boundaries. Her work reflects independence, resilience, and an unshakable commitment to her voice, both on stage and on the page.
"Music is my outlet. I just sit at the piano and let it all fall out. It’s natural for me, even through the hard times. That’s why I do it - because I’m meant to do it."
